Our contractors have over 26 years of experience and hold a NVQ LEVEL 2 in various trades.

After I finished school, I went on to Barnfield College to achieve an NVQ LEVEL 2 in brickwork, which was 26 years ago. I first worked for my family construction company doing extensions on people’s homes, and we were taught from the very beginning to always keep a clean and tidy site and working environment, which we still use in full force today.

We have experience in bricklaying, conversions, property extensions, hardscaping, refurbishments, and many other building works.

It is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian villas, 1930s semis and large post-war detached houses, and each type wants a different approach to extending. Harpenden housing stock

Around Crabtree Lane, Cravells Road and Bloomfield Road you are mostly dealing with late-Victorian and Edwardian brick, solid-wall construction, generous ceiling heights and long rear gardens — ideal for full-width rear extensions with a glazed link. The Uplands and Southdown bring 1930s semis with side access wide enough for a two-storey side extension. Towards Kinsbourne Green and Rothamsted the plots are larger detached houses where wrap-around extensions and garden rooms make more sense than loft work.

Conservation areas & the Common

Properties fronting Harpenden Common, the High Street and parts of Batford sit inside conservation areas, where permitted development is trimmed back: side elevations, roof alterations and front-facing changes usually need consent, and brick, mortar colour and window detail get scrutinised. We match existing brick and use lime mortar where the wall calls for it rather than defaulting to modern cement.

Planning & building control

Harpenden falls under St Albans City & District Council for planning and building control, with Hertfordshire highways involved on anything touching a footway crossing. Plenty of rear extensions and loft conversions go through on permitted development, but Article 4 and conservation constraints apply street by street.
